How It's Made: Recycled Horn Designs


Ever wonder how recycled cow horn pieces are made? It's one of the locally-sourced materials used in our products.
Some of these include our Aspen and Hypnose necklaces and Horn Bangles.

We took a special trip to our cow horn partner in Uganda to show you how it's made. Check out the amazing process!

The horn comes from Ankole-Watusi, or Ankole longhorn, a cattle breed native to Africa. Both male and female cows
start growing horns at about two months. Ankole horns are various mixtures of white, brown and black
and can reach up to three feet in length.

Cattle herds are raised all over in Uganda and sold to butchers once they're fully grown.
While horns are normally discarded, over the years it's become more common to recycle them to make various products.

After being picked up from local butchers, the horn sits for five days, giving the muscle inside the base of the horn time to harden.
The horn is then pounded to separate and remove the muscle, leaving the base hollow.

The horn soaks in a cleaning solution before getting scrubbed clean.
The solid tips, usually seven to ten inches long, are cut off from the hollow base to be used for smaller items including beads.

Next, the horn is boiled to melt off the outside layer, removing marks and scuffs.
The horn is then soaked and scrubbed again before sitting out to dry.

Finally, the horn is ready to be filed into pieces and polished.
